Formed in 1722 and carved from Craven County, Carteret County was named in honor of Englishman Sir John Carteret, who became the Earl of Granville and one of the Lord Proprietors of North Carolina. Early economy was based on fish, tobacco and lumber as well as deer skins that were exported to England. However, the major commercial industry was the turning of pine into tar, pitch, resin, and turpentine, products were highly coveted by the shipbuilders in England. Morehead City is the largest town in the county, developed as a planned railroad town. Developed by John M. Morehead, a Governor of North Carolina, he saw a ‘great commercial city’ the New York City of the South at the point where Newport River and Beaufort Inlet met. Carteret County has several sites designated on the North Carolina Civil War Trails, with Fort Macon as its centerpiece. The five sided garrison, constructed of brick and stone is a fine example of 19th century military architecture and fortification in the country. Carteret County, NC nearby Attractions & Activities
