Craven County, NC History

Named in honor of William, Earl of Craven, the official Craven County seal was designed and adopted in 1981, using the coat of arms of the Earl and his nephew William, Lord Craven, who succeeded him as Lord Proprietor of Carolina.  The motto of the seal, “Virtus in Actione Consistit” stands today.
Originally included as a precinct of Bath County, Craven was established in its present form in 1712.  New Bern became the county seat in 1722 as well as the capital of the colony and the first capital until 1794.  Because of its locations, Craven County grew in size and importance during the mid 18th century thanks in large part to being the county seat as well as a river port.  As Craven County moved forward into the 19th century, it flourished along with the railroad system, creating a commercial dominance along with cultural sophistication and wealth of its residents.  Today, Craven County is a vacation stronghold and home to families who can trace their heritage back to the Civil War.
