Pamlico County, NC Area Guide
Pamlico County, NC General Information
Bordered largely by water, Pamlico County has a rich environment of around 213,000 acres, surrounded by more than half that in water. A wide variety of habitats are found through Pamlico, from open sound water, marshlands, and mixed pine and hardwood forests. This setting offers an extensive natural resource base for agriculture, forestry and fishing in the area, not to mention tourism.
Bordered by Goose Creek, the Upper Broad Creek forms the county’s boundary with Craven County and Pamlico Sound, along with the Neuse River to the south.
The recreation and retirement industry work alongside the agricultural community, with ties to the natural environment nurtured by residents to create an attractive area for both the people who call Pamlico County home and the visitors who come to enjoy getting away from it all.

Pamlico Cou nty, NC History
Settled by the Europeans in the early 1700’s, the area was already inhabited on the northern edges of the county by the Pampticoe Indians, members of the Algonquin tribes. These people called Pamlico, “Tataku” which means, “Where the land and sea meet the sky.” After the Tuscarora War of 1711, Scottish and English colonists came to the area, and in 1713, the remaining Native Americans left the area. Settlement was slow, due to the isolated peninsula, and the earliest areas settled were at the heads of rivers, creeks and bays. Because of good drainage and easy access, agriculture in the county was mainly along the Neuse River. Eventually, the interior of the county was settled once a road system was developed.
